English - week commencing 1st June

Over the past couple of months, we have all spent much more time than usual in our homes. Your challenge this week is to write a description and draw a picture if you would like to of your dream home. Money is not a problem in this challenge, you can build it however and wherever you dream of.

Think about:

  • Where is the house? What country? In a city? In a forest? On a mountain?
  • What rooms are in the house?
  • What is the garden like?
  • How is the house decorated?
  • Does the house have any special features? An underground section? A pool?
Remember to use features of descriptive writing (adjectives, WOW words, adverbs, similes, metaphors)

Area and Perimeter challenges:

Challenge One: Garden Designers
We have a Challenge for you to consolidate area and perimeter! Because you enjoy being outside I would like to know both the area and perimeter of your garden. Could you create a map/plan of your ideal garden with any equipment in of your choosing but it has to fit and where you would put it? (Use the internet to help with sizes of equipment)

Challenge Two: Adventures in Wonderland

You have the unique opportunity to be a key player in the creation of the country’s largest theme park ever built. We are looking for people with skills in architecture, design and events organisation to take us to the next level of theme park adventures! Our creativity and the combination of traditional and bang-up-to-date attractions makes us stand out from the crowd. Join us to help families make amazing memories for years to come. The park has building consent for 4.8km2 of wasteland to build upon. The wasteland sits in a larger area of old industrial land so we have a number of options:

1. Calculate the area of each plan. Which options meet our planning requirements?

We need four distinct areas for our theme park; Water Adventures, High Flyers, Coaster Mania and Back in Time. Each should have almost equal space and it should be possible for a family to walk around the park in one day.

3. Draw your chosen shape in your books or on the grid below, include the boundaries and labels for all four themes of the park. Give the area of each theme in km2 . Each square represents 1km2 .

Each area of the park will have its own colour theme. The fences all around the outer edge of the area will show the boundary and keep the colour theme vibrant.

English

Hello year 6,

This week for your English learning we would like you to have a go at writing a poem about your time off school.

Mrs Rodgers has written one as an example, you can use some of her ideas if you like.

Remember to email your learning to us, we love to see it!

‘Schools may close’ they said, but I thought ‘no way!’
I didn’t think that we would see the day
Sadness and worry and some feelings of fear
Would this be it for the rest of the year?

Monday morning came and no alarm to be heard
No rush hour traffic, just the tweeting of a bird
The world seems so calm, so quiet and so still
But working together we will get over the hill

Stay home, stay safe, let’s all work together
To make our country better forever
Laptop on, to post on the blog
Followed by some fresh air and a walk with the dog

Life has been strange for a little while now
But you’re still working hard, so go on take a bow!
We will keep going until it is done
Let’s show the virus that it has not won!

Question time!

1.     How do you think the huskies in the picture feel? Why?
2.   How would you feel if you fell into ice-cold water? Why?
3.   Have you ever seen a frozen lake? Why are they so dangerous?

Sentence challenge!

Re-write the sentence below, inserting three commas in the correct places.
In his rucksack he carried a medical pack some sun cream a woolly hat sunglasses and a bottle of water.

Sentence Improver!

These sentences need help to get better. Can you help?
The dogs ran across the lake. Snow fell from the sky onto the ground.

Story starter!

The journey had gone well so far. The huskies barked encouragement to each other, pulling together, straining against the weight behind them. The edge of the lake was in sight, one hundred metres away. He muttered a prayer to himself, begging for the ice to take the weight of the sled. Ninety metres. He shivered as the icy wind whipped against his red-raw cheeks and snow-encrusted beard. Eighty metres. They would reach the land soon.
It was then that he heard it. CRACK…The sled shuddered. Seventy metres.
CRACK… He could see the water through the ice. CRACK… The ground beneath him started to shatter…
Can you continue the story of the journey across the Arctic? Will the team make it across the lake?
